Carpet Cleaning - Odor elimination and carpet cleaning tips

Eliminating odors can be a chore, and carpet cleaning is difficult unless you have professional grade equipment and a lot of free time. In many cases, a professional carpet cleaner may be needed, especially if your carpet has gone a long time without cleaning or if you are simply not up to the task. However, there are a few simple tips and tricks you can use to clean minor to moderate levels of dirt and eliminate odors. Here, we’ll go over a few of these tips that will help from everything from pet messes to muddy footprints.

It should be stated right off the bat that carpet cleaning requires specific tools, and without those tools it will be much harder to do. In order to get the job done right, you would ideally have a carpet shampooing machine and a vacuum, although some minor messes can be gotten out with liquid or powder chemicals. Begin by evaluating the extent of the mess. Minor stains and messes are confined to a small area, are relatively fresh, and are easier to get out. Moderate messes include those that may have been spread around more, have been allowed to sit for a while, or are persistent messes such as red wine. Major messes include those that cover a significant area of carpet, have soaked into the carpet, and are very difficult to get out (like maple syrup).

Once you have evaluated your mess, you can begin cleaning by choosing the tools for the job. Minor messes can generally be fixed with a spray bottle of carpet cleaning liquid and paper towels or a dust buster. Moderate messes may require carpet shampoo and a vacuum, and may even take several rounds of treatment. Larger messes will likely require the aid of a professional carpet cleaner. If you are unable to get the mess out with home cleaners, don’t bother trying any of the half-baked home remedies online and simply call the professionals. You will save yourself some time and frustration.

Strong odors, such as those left by pet accidents, can be eliminated by cleaning the area as you would any other mess and then mixing lemon juice with club soda and spraying the area with it. Allow this mixture to soak into the carpet for about fifteen minutes, and then use paper towels to dry it off. This will eliminate all but the strongest odors.
